This is coalition art by ICE, the bringing together of 3 artists working to our specific brief creating this important painting.
The background is a collage of colour and emotion and was painted by Boogie Moli. Boogie has himself been subjected to racism and this ‘singling out’ because of his skin colour still exists in our society today.
Gently embedded in the freestyle background are six great sayings from the six icons depicted in the picture.
They are quiet and subdued, they do not dominate the picture, but they are there and captured forever, six poignant sayings, not scripted in advance but coming from the heart, from passion and emotion and a desire to make a real lasting difference.
We then repeat these important phrases which are set on separate plaques inset within the frame at the bottom of the painting.
Each saying is printed in black type and etched into its own brushed stainless effect plaque.
Nicolas J Smith is perhaps one of the best photorealistic contemporary figurative artists in the UK. A critically acclaimed portrait artist known for producing highly realistic, meticulously crafted oil paintings for both private commissions and public collections.
In sharp contrast to the freestyle background is the pin sharp portraits of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Martin Luther King, Lewis Hamilton, Michelle Obama and Marcus Rashford.
Three giants from the 1960s in the fight against racism are set alongside the new flag bearers, Lewis, Marcus and Michelle. There are of course many others who could certainly earn a place within the picture, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Doreen Lawrence, Gandhi, to name just a few.
James Blinkhorn completes the trio, he’s been an artist all his life and has a wide range of styles. James added the final finishing touch to the piece by adding the iconic image of Picasso’s Dove of Peace to the tracksuit top of Marcus Rashford. Whilst a small addition, for us, it’s the icing on the cake, and speaks volumes in its simplicity.
