Attack of the Alligators

When Thunderbirds was first produced back in the 1960’s it was considered very cutting edge in some of the techniques Gerry and Sylvia Anderson used in making the episodes. One such technique was to use actual animals in some of the shots and then cut back to the puppets. The first time this technique was used was within the episode entitled Attack of the Alligators when real Alligators were used. Viewed today, some 60 years on, it all seems very amateurish but back then it really was ground breaking. Animal Rights people actually complained to the TV channels saying that it was cruel to use live gators in the programme although in reality it was quite clear that the filming was done in a Zoo enclosure and the animals were not harmed at all. Alberto makes his usual humorous refence to this technique by creating a range of soft toy alligators within the piece which was painted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series hence the number 50 in the bottom right corner of the painting with pilot Virgil sitting within the zero, a clever and brilliant oil painting by Alberto Martinez.
